Our Name

The city of Lakota got it's name from the Dakota Territory Governor N.H. Ordway.  He named the new village for the Lakotah Indian tribe.  Lakotah is the Teton Sioux word for allies-land of plenty-many heads.  Otah means plenty.  In the Santee, Lakota means Dakota.
